Hot tub platforms
The load is the whole story
A normal residential deck is designed for roughly 40 pounds per square foot of live load. Fill a six seat spa and add its occupants and the figure across that footprint climbs toward 100. No ordinary frame absorbs a jump that size, and when it gives way it gives way all at once.
So the spa footprint is treated as its own structural problem. Joists run closer together beneath the tub, a beam passes directly under it, and the footings are placed and sized for that concentrated load instead of being borrowed from the deck grid.
Access and service
Every spa has an equipment bay that will need attention at some point. We build a lift out decking panel or a hinged hatch on the service side while the frame is still open. The alternative is cutting into a finished deck on the morning the pump fails.
Placement
Close to a door, because a February evening decides how often a spa is used. Sheltered from the prevailing wind. Away from a bedroom window, since a pump runs at night. Setting the tub down into the deck surface looks far better than standing it on top, and it costs more, because the frame must step around it and the drainage below has to be worked out properly.
Above ground pool surrounds
Freestanding, always
An above ground pool wall holds water in. It is not a beam and it is not a post, and resting any part of a deck on it is how those walls buckle.
The surround therefore stands entirely on its own footings. We scribe the boards in close and leave a narrow gap so the pool and the deck can move independently while still reading as one piece from a chair.
Height and the gate
The walking surface sits level with the top rail or slightly below it. Anywhere the deck opens onto water, that opening falls under the barrier rules, which means gate hardware that shuts and latches on its own to whatever standard your jurisdiction has adopted.
Partial or full
Decking one side of the pool costs a fraction of going all the way around, and it covers what a pool deck is mostly used for: a place to drop towels and a steady edge to climb in and out from. A full wrap photographs beautifully and costs two to three times as much. It is worth being honest about which of those you are buying.
Decking material around water
Capped PVC
Our first recommendation here, even though it is the priciest board we fit. PVC is solid material rather than a core wearing a shell, so a cut end that gets wet has nothing to swell. It runs cooler than wood flour composite, and chlorine and salt leave it alone.
Mineral based composite
Mineral core boards likewise refuse to soak up water and stay comfortable underfoot. Typically less costly than PVC and a thoroughly reasonable second choice.
Wood
Timber looks superb and performs well, and a pool is the hardest place on any property to keep it looking that way. Splash out, full sun and chlorine strip a finish much faster than ordinary weather would. Wood beside a pool is a fair choice provided sealing happens at the early end of the schedule.
Colour and heat
Dark boards around a pool in an Ohio July are a mistake most people make once. Paler greys and tans run noticeably cooler underfoot, and on the open, unshaded lots common in Dublin that difference decides whether the deck is usable at all in the afternoon. Drainage and grading
A pool sheds water all day and every drop has to end up somewhere other than under your footings or against the back wall. Grading beneath and around the structure carries it off. Many flat Columbus area lots drain poorly and hold water after a storm, so we also look at whether an under deck system earns its place catching that water at the joist line and piping it clear.

What does a hot tub deck have to hold?
A great deal more than an ordinary deck. A six seat spa full of water, with people in it, often works out near 100 pounds per square foot, while a normal residential deck is framed for about 40. That calls for joists set closer, a beam placed directly under the spa and footings sized for the point load. Resting a filled tub on an ordinary frame is one of the more dangerous shortcuts in this trade.
Which decking holds up best around water?
Look for something slip resistant that does not bake in the sun. Capped PVC is the toughest, being solid right through the board, cooler than a wood flour composite and untroubled by chlorine or salt. Mineral core composite is a strong second. Any dark board on a south facing pool deck will be too hot to cross barefoot in July, which rather defeats the point of the pool.
Can the deck rest on an above ground pool?
No, and it never should. That wall is built to hold water and nothing else. We build the surround as a self supporting deck on its own footings, cut in close to the pool so the two look like one build, with a small gap that lets the pool move independently of the structure.
What about fencing and gates?
Barrier rules are set by your local jurisdiction and they cover the whole enclosure, not only the deck. Gate hardware that closes and latches by itself, latch height and any gap beneath the barrier all fall under the code. We lay the deck out to meet those rules and point out anything on an existing fence that will not pass, which is far better found before an inspection.
Will chlorine or salt water harm the boards?
Splash out is unkind to timber, which greys and softens faster beside a pool than anywhere else on a property, and it attacks unprotected fasteners as well. Salt systems are harder on metal again. We fit stainless or well coated hardware near water and generally steer clients to PVC or capped composite rather than wood.
Can you build around an in ground pool?
Yes, and the coping is where the care matters most. The deck must not bear on the shell, water has to be led away from the structure rather than under it, and the joint between coping and decking needs to sit flush enough to be safe under a bare foot. It is a more exacting job than a standard deck and we price it as one rather than discovering it halfway.
